Why would I need a language editor, when computers all have automatic spellcheckers anyway?
Computer spellcheckers only pick up spelling mistakes in a particular language, and also cannot pick up errors where the wrong word has been used, but spelled correctly (e.g. “concerned” instead of “consent”, or “hopped” instead of “hoped”). A language editor also helps to make your sentences easier to read and understand, making it easier for your target audience to understand you and take you seriously.
What does it cost to use the services of a language editor?
The cost of language editing varies greatly. Some services (such as the checking of a short document or advertisement) may cost the client as little as R30! Translating costs more, due to the more technical and time-consuming nature of the work involved. Academic editing of a full thesis is usually in the region of R3500 upwards, depending on the number of words involved and the language proficiency of the writer.
